Dimorphodon in History

Just east of the village of Lyme Regis in England during the 19th century, the successful paleontologist Mary Anning found multiple fossils of the skeletal remains from large aquatic dinosaurs. Additionally, some remains of a pterosaur were also discovered. The famous dinosaur paleontologist, William Buckland acquired the remains the following year and called it "Pterodactylus macronyx" because the three claws at the middle hand bone of the flight arm were relatively big and strong.

In 1858, Richard Owen obtained skeleton remains from the British Museum of London which obviously belonged to the same species. Based on obvious differences from the known species of Pterodactylus from the upper Jurassic layers of Soinhofen, a new name of ,"Dimorphodon macronyx" was coined because the catch teeth in the front jaw were very large and followed up behind by multiple small teeth.

Till today, fossilized remains of the Dimorphodon are very rare. The exact shape of the tail is not yet known.
